This year’s Inter District Tennis Championships were held at Kilgraston School over the Easter Holidays.
The competition involves 8 Districts from Scotland who compete in under 11s and 13s over one weekend, and under 15s and 17s in the following weekend. The Central Scotland Tennis Team put in an excellent effort to finish 3rd in both age groups over the two weekends.
In 1996 both Andy and Jamie Murray represented the Central Scotland team in this event to give Central Scotland a victory in the championships — it was not to be this year, however.
In the under 11s and under 13s age group Central Scotland found themselves in a strong qualifying group with the Highlands, West of Scotland and the Borders. Central Scotland recorded comfortable wins against the Highlands and the Borders but lost out to the eventual winners West of Scotland. In the 3rd/4th playoff Central beat the East of Scotland.
In the older age group, under 15s and 17s, it was a similar story with Central Scotland being in a qualifying group with Tayside, the North East and the West of Scotland. Again the Central team recorded comfortable wins against the North East and Tayside, but were beaten very closely by the West of Scotland. Central then beat the Highlands to finish 3rd.
Central Scotland tennis coach Adam Brown said “To finish 3rd both weekends was a great effort by the team, and the best we have done over both weekends for some time. Although the older team were a bit disappointed not to make it through to the final, there were a lot of encouraging performances from the Central Scotland team, and a lot of positives they can take from the display”.
